The Book of Amos is one of the Minor\Lesser prophets, those other dozen prophets in the Bible. Amos is most likely one of the first of the prophetic books to be written.
The book itself begins with a brief introduction about who Amos is, when it was written, and what the prophecy will contain. Amos was a shepherd from Tekoa which was in the Kingdom of Judea, who received a vision concerning Israel in the reign of Uzziah, King of Judea and Jeroboam, King of Israel (two year before the Earthquake). Scholars and geologists have concluded that the earthquake was a major event likely around an 8 on the modern Richter scale and took place around 760 BC.
Then it gets bad the prophecy from the Lord isn’t that happy. The Lord roars his judgement upon the Nations to Aram, Philiatia, Tyre, Edom, Ammon, Moab, Judah and Israel. These are all the nations around Israel and Judah. This part it is similar as every nation has not been doing great things and for the innumerable transgressions of the people in each location the Lord will not revoke the punishment. These punishments are pretty severe complete destruction for all burning down castles and the like with the exception of Aram where the people will be exiled to Kir. For Israel the Lord gives these extra reasons saying basically I put you here I can take it away at any time, I gave you, Israel prophets and nazirites but you corrupted them and told them not to prophecy. So the Lord goes to the extreme with the Israelites saying “I will crush you.”
This doesn’t sound like anything good will come of this and we have that Earthquake coming. From this point it doesn’t look good but we have some time to go and more of Amos to read hopefully it turns for the better.
