Family Vacations

This past week I was on a family vacation and sure it was a tittle weird. Sure, I wasn’t related to anyone but they are family none the less. We went to the farm which was always talked about but I had never experienced. It was worth the wait but I do find the whole experience still a bit strange as I know all the adults better than their children as I’ve spent more time with all of them than the few times that their children came up/visited their Grandma and most of that time was spent catching up with their aunts and uncles/hanging out with one another so I’ve had a few conversations with them but they are basically “what have you been doing?” Sure I know them but I really don’t know much about them at all. It’s a strange relationship here all around on top of all the invites to go visit the ones out of the country. Sure I would get to know but is this the best solution.

The vacation was fun and all but there were fifteen all together and hanging out with them but as the old saying goes “guests like fish begin to smell after three days.”  This was the first real big vacation I’ve been on in a while as my own family hasn’t done anything in years  but we’ve got a big family as well so reason, but we do gather together quite a bit for parties and the like. However this was enough of a family vacation for a while.

Nickelodeon’s 90s revival

This upcoming year is going to be a time for many revivals in the form of TV movies. First up this November Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie will come out it takes place two years after the show ended. There is a first look up on YouTube as well as a sneak peak.   It looks like it will be a whole lot better than that Legends of the Hidden Temple movie they made last year.  Sometime in 2018 Rocko’s Modern Life comes back with an hour special which brings back the whole cast to reprise their roles and at Comic Con they had a sneak peak. This has the same feeling of the original show and it’s on this list of shows that i want to watch.  I hope that we don’t have to wait all the way to next November for Rocko to come out. but who really knows. Now if they could only do some other live action shows as well like Are you Afraid of the Dark?, Pete and Pete, or just throw a dart up there at the NickSplat lineup. These were all fun shows and the I’m sure that the fans of the old shows would love to see some of these come back as long as they are good.

International Chess Day

Today is International Chess Day the day that the International Chess Federation (FIDE) was founded way back in 1924. If you have a chance break out a Chess board and play a game either with a friend or even against the computer online. I’ve been a fan of Chess since I was a kid and that movie Searching for Bobby Fischer came out. Now I haven’t gotten that crazy about chess sure I’ve analyzed my games taking notation of past game, one of my roommates in college had a chess clock and we’d play like 5 minute games at midnight with some beer or wine, those were some fun times. I have got to get a clock at some point. So Happy Chess Day everyone.

News Roundup

First off Family Guy has released a nine minute Adam West tribute on YouTube. It’s a nice tribute for a wonderful actor.

Next Disney had their huge  D23 convention this past weekend and there is tons of news coming out.  Incredibles 2 starts shortly after the end of the original, Wreck it Ralph 2 will spoof Disney Princesses and the internet, the Live action Aladdin has been cast with Will Smith as the Genie, The Jungle Cruise ride will be getting it’s own movie with The Rock, there was also talk about Star Wars and the next Avengers movie but I expect to see/hear more about those at the SDCC. The coolest news was about a Star Wars hotel at Walt Disney World as well as a whole Star Wars land Galaxy’s Edge coming to Disney World and Disneyland

Finally, there is a new Doctor on Doctor Who and spoilers it’s a woman. The Doctor is Jodie Whittaker, she was on Broadchurch and in the film Attack the Block. Now sure it is great that The Doctor is female but I hope that’s not the whole plot. It seems likely that we might get a male companion for the first time since in all seriousness Adric as they seem to like the romance aspect of the Doctor and Companion over their first couple of episodes. I really hope that they don’t make that big of a deal over the fact that the Doctor is now female since we’ve gone through this with Missy (The Master) a couple of years ago and they didn’t make such a big deal about it.

Wedding at Cana

The second Luminous mystery is the wedding feast at Cana, the place where the first miracle took place. It is found in John’s Gospel (2:1-11) the story goes that Jesus and Mary were invited to a wedding and the party ran out of wine. Mary told Jesus to do something about this and he said “My hour has not yet come”, so Mary goes to the servants and tells them to do what he tells you. The servants fill up containers with water and then give it to the chief steward. The steward after tasting it goes to the bridegroom remarks that usually the best wine is usually served first. The fruit of this mystery is to Jesus through Mary. The whole Mary thing is a tough part for Christians to understand about Catholics but Mary is a conduit between mankind and to Jesus. As these words of Mary are the last time we hear from her in the Bible “Do whatever he tells you.” This is something that we need to remember we need to listen to what Jesus says.

Fatima 100 (July)

On 13 July 1917, the children shepherds yet again were visited by the beautiful lady. This time around the children had a vision in which they saw three things, the Fatima Secrets and these weren’t nice things. The first two secrets were first written by Sister Lucia in 1941 in her third memior, the final one was kept a secret until 1944 when she wrote it down and it was eventually sent to the Vatican, which finally revealed it in 2000. The lady told them to continue praying the Rosary adding the Fatima prayer, to come back next month and the next until October when the Lady said she will tell them who she it.

The first secret that they saw was a vision of Hell “…we saw as it were a sea of fire. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form, like transparent burning embers, all blackened or burnished bronze, floating about in the conflagration, now raised into the air by the flames that issued from within themselves together with great clouds of smoke, now following back on every side like sparks in huge fires, without weight or equilibrium, amid shrieks and groans of pain and despair, which horrified us and made us tremble with fear. (it must have been this sight which caused me to cry out, as people say they heard me do). The demons could be distinguished by their terrifying and repellent likeness to frightful and unknown animals, black and transparent like burning coals….”

The second secret comes from the first the Lady continued “You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. To save them, God wishes to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If what I say to you is done, many souls will be saved and there will be peace. The war is going to end: but if people do not cease offending God, a worse one will break out during the Pontificate of Pope Pius XI. When you see a night (28 January 1938) illumined by an unknown light, know that this is the great sign given you by God that he is about to punish the world for its crimes, by means of war, famine, and persecutions of the Church and of the Holy Father.” To prevent this, she asks for the Consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart, and the Communion of reparation on the First Saturdays. If these suggestions are heeded Russia will be converted and there will be peace if not Russia will spread “her errors throughout the world” yet in the end “My Immaculate Heart will triumph. Now this secret has some problems with it as there is the mention of Pius XI who wasn’t Pope until 1922.

The final secret is different as it starts with an Angel with a flaming sword, it cried out “Penance, Penance, Penance!” while pointing toward the earth. “Then they saw a bishop dressed in white (the Holy Father) along with a crowd of other bishops, priest, as well as men and women religious going up a steep mountain, at the top of which there was a big Cross of rough-hewn trunks…before reaching the cross the Holy Father went through a big city half in ruins and half trembling with halting step, afflicted with pain and sorrow, he prayed for the souls of the corpses he met on his way; having reached the top of the mountain, on his knees at the foot of the big Cross he was killed by a group of soldiers who fired bullets and arrows at him, and in the same way there died one after another the other Bishops, Priests, men and women Religious, and various lay people of different ranks and positions.” Now the Vatican has implied that this is about the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II on 13 May 1981, however added to this reveal was a commentary by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (Benedict XVI) which he says “the vision is not to show a film of an irrevocably fixed future. Its meaning is exactly the opposite: it is meant to mobilize the forces of change in the right direction.”

Emmy Awards, the weird categories

So the nominations came out today for the Emmy awards and while i was looking at them I discovered that there is an Emmy for Best Commercial. Sure it’s one of the Creative Arts Emmy that get handed out before the Primetime Emmy Awards. Yet it sure is cool that commercials can win awards somewhere.

There are also awards for best Casting in all four categories as well as Main title design and music. Then there are tons of makeup awards one for non-prosthetics and another for prosthetics. According to the Wikipedia page the Creative Arts are going to be televised this year on FXX September 16, the night before the Emmy Awards are broadcast. They won’t be live but they are going to be televised which I think is the first time this is happening ever. I might check it out.

Adam Ruins Everything

This is one of the better shows on television in which you learn something in each episode. The new season came out on July 11 and Adam Conover did an interview with Den of Geek and talked about the show and upcoming season.  Adam Conover’s show started as a web series on College Humor it was picked up as a show by truTv and has been airing since the fall of 2016. The best part of the show is that it shines light on popular false impressions and trends, debunking false ideas that pervade American society. Like how the De Beer’s diamond company is behind the diamond engagement ring, how Mickey Mouse screwed up the copyright laws in America, or how the MPAA ratings are pointless. This upcoming season Adam tackles having a baby, dieting, the suburbs,  conspiracy theories and even the show itself. If you want to watch a new show this is something that I would recommend.

Net Neutrality Day of Action

A whole bunch of websites are participating today apparently many sites will be displaying an alert on their homepage that will try to give users a feel for what the Internet would be like without net neutrality. This is a follow up to the SOPA protest back in 2012 and the Internet Slowdown day in 2014. Both of these caused some serious public knowledge. The Stop Online Piracy Act went no where and the FCC placed the internet as a Tier II communications service preventing throttling, blocking and selling speedier access to subscribers. Hopefully, this provides similar action by the general public and the FCC chairman Ajit V. Pai’s plan to end the US policies which establish net neutrality won’t go any further.

Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan

We have made our way through one of the mysteries and now it is on to the newest one introduced by Pope John Paul II in his apostolic letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae (October 2002). These are the Luminious mysteries or mysteries of Light. The first Luminious mystery is the Baptism of Jesus. It can be found in the three synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke) where we hear from the sky “This is/You are my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” and in John’s Gospel while it doesn’t have the baptism story it does have John the Baptist testifying about Jesus saying that “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.  And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.” The fruit of the mystery is openness to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is something that we all should be praying for to come into our lives and inspire all our actions.
