The reading for this week are from the prophet Isaiah 62:1-3, Psalm 96, Paul’s 1st letter to the Corinthians 12:4-11, and John’s Gospel 2:1-11.
Well this week we actually encounter some of the things I talked a bit about last week Gifts of the Spirit and the Wedding at Cana. Boiled down to the base the readings this week are all about love. The Lord loves us so we shouldn’t be ashamed and rejoice in his love. The love is made manifest in the gifts of the Spirit since the Lord give them to us in varied in different ways along with the love from heaven. Finally we have the manifestation of the love of the Lord on the earth in the wedding. Ben Franklin himself reflected upon this gospel story” We hear of the conversion of water into wine at the marriage in Cana as of a miracle. But this conversion is, through the goodness of God, made every day before our eyes. Behold the rain which descends from heaven upon our vineyards; there it enters the roots of the vines, to be changed into wine; a constant proof that God loves us, and loves to see us happy. The miracle in question was only performed to hasten the operation, under circumstances of present necessity, which required it.” This quote “wine is a constant proof that God loves us” has been mis-remember as of late to being about beer but either way it is a profound statement about how the hand of the Lord works its way into the world and it’s all about love. Let us reflect this love out into the World, have a glass or two of wine and maybe even some beer this week.
