With this film we begin the Original Trilogy which many fans claim is by far the better of the two. A New Hope or as it was originally called Star Wars can be a starting point in viewing the films or a midpoint. There is a bunch of way to actually watch the films, not sure what is the best way yet. Spoilers to follow.
In watching all the film back to back this film seems a bit slower paced compared to Episode III with all the epic fights. The first ten minutes you meet Leia and Darth Vader as well as C-3PO and R2-D2 who are sent on a mission by Princess Leia to find Obi-Wan. They escape down to Tatooine. C-3PO and R2 are captured by Jawas and sold to Uncle Owen Lars and his nephew Luke Skywalker. A day later R2 runs off to find Obi-Wan and deliver a message from Leia to him, Luke and C-3PO go and look for R2 and they are attacked by Tusken Raiders. Obi-Wan saves them. Luke is given his father’s light saber and R2 delivers his message “inside this unit are the plan for the Death Star, please bring this to Alderaan and give it to her father to analyze. Luke and company make their way to Mos Eisley but run across the Jawas who have been slaughtered and Luke run to his house where he find Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru both dead, killed by Imperial Stormtroopers. This lead Luke to come back and decides to continue on with Obi-Wan and take R2-D2 to Alderaan so they turn to Han Solo to get them across the galaxy. Leia has been taken to the Death Star and interrogated about the location of the Rebel base, she refuses to name any location so Grand Moff Tarkin decides that Alderaan would be a suitable location to show the power of the Death Star off. It is completely destroyed and as the Millennium Falcon comes out of hyperspace they arrive at the remain of a planet and are drawn toward this “moon”. Obi-Wan goes off to deactivate the tractor beam so they can escape while Luke and Han go off to save the Princess. As they are about to leave Obi-Wan and Darth Vader have a sword fight while Luke watches. Obi-Wan is killed and Luke screams in horror. However unbeknownst to any of them Darth Vader and Tarkin had put a tracking device on the ship and they find the secret base on Yavin IV. The Death Star then goes to Yavin to destroy the Rebels. This is the battle that all timelines in the Star War Universe come from the Battle of Yavin.
Now the acting is all right it seems, we get passable performances and thankfully no overwrought romances. Alec Guinness give a wonderful performance as Obi-Wan and for many is the first role they are introduced the work of the great Mr. Guinness. The score is great as well. All in all it’s a modern Classic and is something that everyone should watch at least once in their lives.
