Ex Machina is an interesting little movie, it’s a British science fiction thriller, and it basically watching a Turning Test take place. I only found out about the film through io9.com. Spoilers to follow.
Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson) a programmer at Bluebook, a search engine, wins a contest to have a week with Nathan (Oscar Issac), the CEO of Bluebook, at his secluded home. When Caleb arrives he learns that the reason why Caleb is there is do a turning test on Ava (Alicia Vikander), a robot with Artificial intelligence which Nathan complied information from Bluebook users searches to figure out how humans think. Caleb says that it is an unfair test since he already knows Ava is a robot but Nathan tells him that the real test is if Caleb can connect with a robot as he connects with a human. Since that is how we need AI Robots to function, Human need more than a box that talks. In the process of the tests Caleb finds himself attracted to Ava and wonders if she is capable of love or if she was just built that way.
It’s a cool movie with robots and a relatively small cast. The story is a lot like the Frankenstein story with man creating something that it can not really control. The movie asks some really big questions about what it mean to be human and how much control we have over technology, The film has gotten mostly positive reviews from just about everywhere. If you are a fan of Science fiction films this is a must watch.
