New Books by Harper Lee and Dr. Seuss

The newest best seller is Harper Lee’s first draft of To Kill a Mockingbird, Go Set a Watchman Many critics have panned the book saying that it’s a plodding first draft and really shouldn’t have been published. Much of the news about the book has been focused on how Atticus Finch is a racist who has arthritis and Jem being dead. These are all minor details and if you really want to read the first draft go ahead but it’s not that great, and is a unique document, it’s akin to reading like Trimalchio and hoping it’s as great as The Great Gatsby. With all the hype and hullabaloo about Watchman, the news of Seuss has been lost.  They have found a new Seuss book. On Tuesday we will have a look. It is another one for children but it’s likely to become a classic. I think that it might be more interesting if someone found some more of the early writings of Dr Seuss, I have The Tough Coughs, As He Ploughs the Dough and it’s been one of my favorite books since  I was little, it was my Grandma’s book. What Pet Should I Get? follows the stories from Redbook are the most recent published in book form, notably Horton and the Kwuggerbug and other stories from last year.  If you are a fan of Dr. Seuss this is bound to be something that children will be reading years from now. I’m hoping that whenever Salinger’s new books start to come out there will be some similar noise.
