This week we have a wide selection of observances, I noted a bunch last week with the Summer Solstice and Father’s Day. The week we celebrate in Virginia Statehood Day as way back on 25 June 1788. Virginia was the tenth state to join the Union and this year Virginia will once again have a state song. As the previous song “Carry Me Back to Old Virginny” was retired and name song emeritus in 1997 however after years of debate Virginia finally has a new state song. Actually the State Senate Virginia voted in two songs so now there is a traditional state song “Our Great Virginia” which is sung to Shenandoah and the popular state song “Sweet Virginia Breeze.”
There is also Ratcatcher’s Day in Hamelin, Germany on 26 June commemorating the Pied Piper. The day is like Secretary’s Day but it honors rat-catchers.
We also have the Nativity of John the Baptist this week. The numbers of hours of daylight starts to diminish as John the Baptist said since Jesus is here I have to decrease. I’ve always thought that this was a cool coincidence as the hours of daylight start to gain around Christmas, sure it has to do with the date of the solstices.
