Could this be the year? That seems to be the question we’ve been asking for the past decade or so as the Belmont comes along as there have been a large group of Derby and Preakness winners that have come to Belmont only to leave us all disappointed. The Belmont is known as the Test of the Champion as it is the longest of the Triple Crown races at twelve furlongs (1 1/2 miles). Now we haven’t had a Triple Crown winner since ’78 when Affirmed won it. Thirty seven years is a long time to be without a Triple Crown winner. Many people have their hopes on American Pharoah a unique horse who has a storied lineage having several great horses (Man o’ War, Secretariat and Tom Fool).
This year we have a unique field running as they are all are related from the sire Mr. Prospector. I think this is a first for this happening. This Belmont Stakes will have eight horses running all but one have run in one or more of the previous races (Kentucky Derby or Preakness Stakes) with the exception of Madefromlucky who last ran in the Peter Pan Stakes and won. Many odds makers are saying that two horses have a chance of besting American Pharoah, Frosted may have the best chance of pushing American Pharoah as it ran wide at the Derby and still managed to come in fourth, the other horse is Materiality who finished sixth in the Derby. Hopefully, it will be an exciting race since then it doesn’t matter who wins the race.
