Prometheus (2012)

I finally got around to seeing Prometheus and it wasn’t as bad as many people had made it out to be. It tells the tale of perhaps where the Aliens in the Alien franchise come from although not a strict prequel although that might change with the Prometheus sequel in 2016.

The movie itself I found to be very spiritual as the characters are on a quest for the origin of life on Earth. Sure they discover that it is Engineers who created life but that doesn’t dampen the faith of Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace ), the archaeologist who want to find out where we came from. As she has discovered the same star map depicted in art work by disparate early cultures around the world. So she and her team travel to the location on the map with the help of an android David (Michael Fassbender). When the arrive they get out and explore only to find that there are no “engineers” alive (there are a bunch of aliens that have died), but there is a room full of cylindrical containers as well. A dust storm starts which stops their exploring so they bring back an alien head to see what it is, and David smuggles back a cylinder, in it is black goop.

Many of the critics have looked down at the plot over at Rotten Tomatoes they said “Ridley Scott’s ambitious quasi-prequel to Alien may not answer all of its big questions, but it’s redeemed by its haunting visual grandeur and compelling performances—particularly Michael Fassbender as a fastidious android.” So the movie was very exciting and Michael Fassbender’s performance is a highlight but the plot is the main problem for the critics as they have said that things are left unresolved/unanswered or were too predictable.

Over on reddit there is a read titled Everything in Prometheus explained. I really liked reading this after I saw the movie as it helped explain some elements that I really didn’t understand. The film also features a strong female lead and it passes the Bechdel test. So I liked the movie if you want a science fiction film that’s not about superheroes please ignore what the critics say and go watch it
